When meeting with clients, one topic we always discuss is the design style they want for their room. Oftentimes, we hear: “We don’t really like traditional, but we don’t want super modern either. So, I guess that makes our style transitional.”
This then opens the door to more questions, in order to better understand what they like. For instance, how do they want their room to feel, how do they intend to use the room, and what colours do they like?
Photos help us explore these questions. Which features they find appealing and the ones they have a strong allergic reaction to reveal a lot about their preferred style.
This transitional living room has a formal vibe, the result of thoughtful design choices.
Balance – The traditional way of creating balance in a room is through symmetry. Both sides of the room are mirror images if you draw a line down the middle.
Attention to Detail – Details in seating and cocktail table have been chosen for their modern vibe. With its architectural biscuit tufted seat cushion, slim arms, and exposed wood base, this sofa is distinctly modern. The oval cocktail table is a traditional shape, but the metal legs and metal framed marble surface give it a modern feel.
Colour scheme – The room’s sleek monochrome scheme is typical of contemporary design. This pared-down colour palette works because of the skillfully varied textures of the upholstery, walls, and finishes.
Artwork + Accessories – The framed artwork also falls into the contemporary and modern genres. Although not arranged as mirror images, the etageres have a sculptural quality and are visually balanced thanks to their accessories.
An interesting style, transitional design combines the old and the new.
