This is the time of year when we start thinking about the holidays. The dining room is the traditional gathering place, unless you’re a kid at the kids’ table. Dining rooms dominated this year’s Decorating Den Interiors’ International Dream Room Competition judged by interior design journalists from across Canada and the United States. Monique Holland of Washington, DC, designed the blue-ribbon room shown above.
A gorgeous gathering space was designed to stand out in the client’s open-concept floor plan. It is impossible not to be awed by the black and white wallpaper and mustard velvet draperies? Adding a unique touch is the custom live edge table. Combined, it creates a modern industrial look.
A traditional style has been transformed into a transitional one in the image above. Navy blue, velvet host chairs and ivory side chairs replaced traditional dining chairs, but it’s the chandelier that steals the show. A hand-applied mother of pearl detail adorns the orb-shaped shades of this multi-pendant light fixture. This makeover by Cathi Lloyd of St. John, Indiana, came in second place.
In the cove above, yellow and white wallpaper showcases the built-in architectural element without taking away from the drama of the adjacent windows. It’s easy to notice how the two-toned dining table adds contrast to the room by keeping it from looking too uniform, while the aqua-blue wall colour pulls from the area rug and window treatments to nicely frame the white millwork. Finally, the multicoloured area rug ties all the colours, patterns, and textures together nicely. Milwaukee’s Suzan Wemlinger designed this third-place dining area.
Adding wallpaper to a room is a great way to give it a new look. Take, for instance, the two-toned wallpaper behind the buffet, which features a starburst pattern. In addition to matching the intensity of the buffet, it also provides a stunning backdrop for the commanding accessories. What a bold statement! How about this wall covering in black and white? The design directs your gaze around the entire space. In this space, this avant-garde oval table fits perfectly. What about that ribbon-shaped chandelier?
Design and function go hand in hand when choosing the right shape for your table. Having a round table allows for free-flowing conversation since you aren’t confined to talking to the person next to you. Look at how this round table can expand to accommodate more seating!
