Coffee Tables: Styles and Styling

Read Time: 3 minutes

We recently heard someone say that coffee tables are passé. Far from it! The latest entries in the International Dream Room competition, judged by interior design journalists, clearly show that coffee tables are very much in vogue. They featured prominently in the commercial, family room, and living room categories, showcasing a wide range of styles and designs.

The photo above provides a valuable lesson in styling: use varied heights and materials, layer items, and don’t forget to include natural elements.

Some tables, like the one above left, are pieces of art in themselves, where excessive surface styling would detract from their artistry. Others, like the contemporary table above right, maintain an open surface for functionality.

Traditional rectangular tables remain popular, but we now see a greater variety of constructions using metals and glass. Books, whether open or closed, singular or stacked, continue to be staples for dressing up these surfaces. A second surface below can be used for seasonal decoration or left plain to highlight the items on the upper surface.

Depending on your furniture placement, circular tables can add aesthetic interest by varying the lines and providing more visual intrigue alongside rectangular furniture. A circular table also complements a curved sofa, which is becoming increasingly popular.

Upholstered pieces can serve dual purposes, functioning as both ottomans and tables. Simply add a tray to display accessories or serve drinks, and you have a versatile piece that enhances both style and functionality.

This stylish coffee table is a multifunctional gem for the male client’s den. It features a lift-top, a bench, and storage, all wrapped in a beautiful ash taupe finish.

Speaking of multifunctionality, the table shown upper left includes four nesting tables that can be used as side tables. Alternatively, consider the touch of elegance offered by the modern glass and metal nesting table (above right).

Three pieces come together to form a multi-piece coffee table, making a bold statement in this uniquely shaped room. The design, dictated by the room’s shape, highlights the advantages of having a Decorating Den Interiors design professional assist with challenging spaces.
