Outdoor Living: Create an Outdoor Room You’ll Actually Want to Use This Summer

There’s something about summer that naturally draws us outside. Whether it’s enjoying your morning coffee on the porch, reading a book in the afternoon shade, or inviting friends over for dinner, your outdoor space has the potential to become one of the most-used “rooms” in your home.

The good news? Creating an inviting outdoor living area doesn’t require a complete makeover. A few thoughtful choices can transform even the simplest patio, balcony, or deck into a space that’s both comfortable and beautiful.

Start with Comfortable Seating

Every successful outdoor space begins with one simple question:

How do you want to use it?

Do you picture yourself relaxing with a book? Hosting family barbecues? Sharing a glass of wine with friends in the evening?

Once you know how the space will be used, selecting the right furniture becomes much easier. A conversational seating arrangement works well around a fire table or coffee table, while a smaller porch may only need two comfortable chairs and a side table.  Comfort should always come first. Outdoor furniture has come a long way in recent years, with performance fabrics and weather-resistant materials that are both durable and surprisingly luxurious.

Add Softness with Textiles

One of the easiest ways to make an outdoor space feel welcoming is by layering in textiles. Outdoor rugs help define seating areas, while cushions and throw pillows instantly add warmth, colour, and personality. Just as they do indoors, fabrics soften hard surfaces and make a space feel lived in rather than simply furnished.

I tend to gravitate toward neutral foundations accented with seasonal colours. It’s an easy way to refresh the look from year to year without replacing your furniture.

Don’t Forget the Greenery

Plants are what truly bring an outdoor space to life. Whether it’s a collection of oversized planters, colourful annuals, herbs near the barbecue, or a few carefully chosen shrubs, greenery adds texture, softness, and movement.

I also love mixing natural materials like wood, wicker, stone, and ceramic planters. Together they create the relaxed, layered feeling that makes an outdoor space feel established rather than newly decorated. Even a handful of well-placed planters can completely change the atmosphere.

Make Shade Part of the Design

A beautiful patio isn’t much use if it’s too hot to enjoy.

Adding shade not only makes your outdoor space more comfortable, but it also helps define it as an extension of your home. Depending on your space, that might mean a large umbrella, a pergola, outdoor drapery panels, or a covered porch.

These features soften the architecture while creating a more intimate setting that’s enjoyable throughout the day.

Think About How You Entertain

If you enjoy having people over, think beyond simply providing enough seating. Where will drinks go? Is there a convenient place to set down a plate? Is there enough lighting once the sun goes down?

Small additions like side tables, serving trays, lanterns, and outdoor storage can make entertaining much easier while helping the space feel more organized. Often, it’s these practical details that make guests feel comfortable without ever realizing why.

Add the Personal Touches

The finishing touches are what make an outdoor space feel like your space. Perhaps it’s a favourite outdoor rug, decorative lanterns, colourful cushions, or planters that reflect your personality. These details help connect your outdoor spaces to the style you’ve created inside your home, making everything feel cohesive and intentional.

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s creating a space where you’ll genuinely enjoy spending time.

Enjoy Summer Outdoors

Your outdoor living space should be every bit as comfortable and welcoming as the rooms inside your home. Whether you’re updating a small front porch or designing an entire backyard retreat, thoughtful planning can make a tremendous difference in both how the space looks and how you use it.

If you’re not sure where to begin, I’d be happy to help. Together, we can create an outdoor space that’s tailored to your lifestyle—one you’ll enjoy throughout the summer and for many seasons to come.
